I closed my book and let it float away. The lights of North America shone below as we orbited the planet. I thought of the 1888 Flammarion engraving, the man who managed to escape the atmosphere and to peer into the heavens, observing the cosmic machinery at work. Weightless, looking at the dark of the Great Lakes against the light of the Eastern US, I realize that I am he. I have broken the bounds of Earth, but not yet of its gravity.
I turn and look in the other direction. Now I am the curious protagonist from the engraving. I have his vantage point, but there are no great wheels or gears. Just an infinite emptiness pockmarked with a paltry 200 billion trillion stars. I could stare into the vastness of the universe and contemplate my pathetically small place. But why? There is so much activity from my ant-like brethren on Earth. So I turn back from the vacuum and smile at the heatmap showing me the location of all the people I've ever known and those I've yet to meet. When I return in my capsule, I will remember this moment. It's when I realized that every night we leave all the lights on in our house, showing any passing benevolent extraterrestrials that we are home, we are awake, and we are busy little beings. This is North America at night.
