Blue Sun Departure is a painting by artist Bryce Holt.
Her greedy father had promised her to a lecherous merchant, knowing she already loved another. She fought the betrothal, publicly unleashing a torrent of curses upon her father and the village elders.
Her protests were ignored and she would have wed, had nature not intervened. That summer, in 1831, a volcano exploded far to the northeast of Hokkaido. A monstrous tsunami crashed upon their shores killing hundreds, including two of the leaders who had backed her father. Then came an unnatural cold, a flurry of snow, and a blue sun in the summer sky. The townsfolk were terrified.
She doubled down, threatening further devastation. Desperate to appease the forces she seemed to command, they offered her a small fortune to leave their village and never return. As she and her lover turned their backs on the village, she was somehow able to keep a triumphant smile from touching her lips.
